...what's this crap about bush trying to 'contain' technological research
which might be applied to the creation of weapons of mass destruction? what
a joke....does this constitute anything more than yet another attempt to
chip away at the fading sovereignty of the people? what's next?...will he be
able to force techno-savvy people to work for the government or be
imprisoned for fear that the implementation of their skills will "leak out
to the public"...and thus perhaps fall into "the wrong hands"? shit is
getting really spooky. that deserted french island i found north of
madagascar is looking more and more appealing every day.

You might have forgotten the 'Jim Bell' trial. It is worth keeping in mind -
despite the fact that AFAIK this story has never been reported in the
mainstream press. Jim Bell was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison by
U.S. District Judge, Jack Tanner, who fined Bell $10,000 and ruled that Bell
would serve two consecutive five-year terms for "stalking" IRS Agent Jeff
Gordon. Bell maintained that he was investigating abuses of power on the
part of the IRS, such as the agency's admitted infiltration of a political
party.
After Bell is released around 2010 (he spent nearly a year in pretrial
custody which will count toward time served), he'll be on probation for
three years and be subject to regular searches and other restrictions. Those
include no contact with Gordon, limited Internet access, and a ban on Bell
using a pseudonym online after his eventual release.
Now what is spooky is this:

Do you know how to use a search engine? Then you too could find out how
WMD's are built. Mr Bush and his ilk think that this makes you dangerous and
that society would be better off with you in jail. To help them track you
down, even librarians - and library computers - have been drafted. If you go
to the library and take out a book, ask for books on, or examine a
card-index in, one of several Dewey categories, the FBI is notified
immediately - and the librarians may be jailed if you discover they have
reported you... At least one real consequence already exists - you are
likely in for a great deal of inconvenience if you try to fly after reading
certain books. Another is that, like Art Bell you may find any possible
future sentences for almost any cause, greatly lengthened, by virtue of what
you are presumed to know (he had a blasting permit - which proved he was
dangerous). The same may well happen if you use certain search terms on
common search engines - as this too supposedly demonstrates that you posses
anti-social special skills.
