Early in 1967 I wrote "The Student As Nigger" and published it in the Los
Angeles Free Press. The article was an outgrowth of my attempts to be a good
teacher. After several years in the English department at L.A. State
College, I had decided that there were limits to how well you could teach in
an authoritarian and dehumanized school system. So I thought I would do my
bit to help change the system...
