Fbound virus nipped in the bud
By James Middleton [14-03-2002]
Worm tied down to Asia Pacific region
Antivirus firms have been battling all night against a virus coming in from
Japan.
The 'Fbound' worm hit the Asia Pacific region with considerable force at
about 2am UK time, but the absence of a big blip in Europe this morning
indicates that the good guys have got Fbound well and truly wrapped up.

"We tracked about 3,000 infections in the Asia Pacific region since about
2am," said Alex Shipp, senior antivirus technologist at MessageLabs. "But
the absence of an outbreak in Europe at about 9am this morning suggests that
it may not hit here."

Shipp reckons that the social engineering attempted by the worm will not
work in Europe. According to reports, Fbound arrives as an email either with
the subject "Important" or with random Japanese text which will only display
on Japanese configured computers.

There is no text in the message body, but the worm is in an attachment
called 'Patch.exe'. Once executed the worm ransacks the Windows Address Book
and mass mails itself out.

"Earlier this morning it looked like it could take off as a big one,"
explained Shipp. "But the poor social engineering, and the fact that
antidotes are out before the US wakes up, means that it may well be
contained."
