Of course, each form has its uses. There are a couple of advantages in a BBS.
A mail list is more ephemeral than a BBS, because the posts in a BBS are (or can be) organized in topics, while to find something in the mail list archives you have to know what you are looking for.
Also, a mail list, while very convenient, is more like a membership system. On the other hand, a BBS is more like an open site. Anyone can wander into a BBS and it is more amenable to being linked to from other web sites, provided the discussions are interesting enough.
