They recently (within the year) figured out the structure of the protein
that acts as a kind of "scaffolding" that neural tissure requires to
"crawl" along or grow. Several months ago I read an article wherein rats
with completely severed spinal cords were walking again after spinal
pinning and "painting" with this protein. After the surgery the cord
reconnected itself and following a recovery period they were ambulatory.
Amazing.
